The 118th psalm is a lesson in Old Testament theology. It begins and closes with praise to God of his enduring love. It reflects those times of national difficulty when Yahweh provided the strength and courage for victory. He can be trusted when the nation is surrounded by enemy forces. Yaweh protects his people and, as we said, his love endures forever. That is all Israel needed to know and it remains true in the Christian era right up to that final day when eternity breaks through.
Psalm 118 Give thanks to the Lord for he is good His love endures forever; Let Israel and her priests repeat His love will leave us never. I called to the Lord in my distress Yahweh’s on my side; When he is with me I need not fear In his shelter I will abide. It is better far to trust the Lord Than put your hope in man; Enemies surround me but with help from on high I destroyed them for that was His plan. The Lord is my strength, he’s rescued me again Listen to the shouts of joy; His mighty right hand has won the battle Proclaim it so all can enjoy. I will give you thanks for you answered my call The stone discarded we prize; What the Lord has done this very day Is marvelous in our eyes. Blessed is the name of the one who comes May he join us and leave us never; Give thanks to the Lord for he is good His love endures forever |
