Romans 12:9-21 is a straight-forward condensed version of how to live the Christian life. I count some two dozen statements or more instructing believers how they are to live. As you read each one slowly it is a good opportunity to reflect on one’s life already lived and think of ways in which you can bring these insights into the years that lie ahead. I like to reflect on scripture because it is God’s word, that is, it is God speaking to me right now – a compendium of divine instruction.
“May your love for one another be absolutely genuine. When it comes to evil of any sort I want you to hate it, really hate it. Don’t let what is good in life get away from you. Love one another from deep within your heart. Honor the other person more than you would have him honor you. Work as hard as you can and serve the Lord with enthusiasm. Rejoice in all the good things about to happen. When others are mean to you, just keep your cool. Keep your prayer life steady and real. If your Christian brother needs something you have, give it to him. Keep your home open to strangers. Bless those who do you harm, don’t curse them. Be happy with everyone who is happy. If someone breaks down in tears, join him in his sorrow. Get along with those around you. Don’t let pride keep you from enjoying regular people. Get over yourself. If someone does you wrong, don’t pay him back in the same currency. Try your best to live a life others think is right. As far as it’s up to you, maintain a cordial relationship with everyone. Don’t try to get even, leave it up to God. If a person is hungry, feed him. If he is thirsty give him something to drink. Don’t let evil get the best of you. Be a winner, do what is good; it works every time.”
