Psalm 91

Every family has customs that provide stability for life. One of our family customs was to sit down together before each summer trip from North Dakota to our fruit farm in Oregon and listen to Dad read the 91st Psalm. As it did in those early years, the psalm still stirs my heart with its theme of God as my refuge.
                     Psalm 91

I’ve chosen to dwell in the shelter of God
In the shadow of the Most High;
He is my refuge, a place that is safe
The God in whom I rely.

He will save you from the hunter’ s snare
And every deadly disease;
Under his wings you’ll be safe and secure
It is there you can rest at ease.

You need not fear the terrors of night
Nor the arrows that fly by day;
Ten thousand will fall at your right hand
But there’s safety there where you stay.

God will command his guardian angels
To protect against dangers unknown;
They will lift you up with tender hands
Lest you strike your foot against stone.

Because you love me, the Lord has said,
I’ll be there to rescue you;
I’ll satisfy you with a life that is long
Protect and bring you through
